How are cashew nuts grown?

Cashew nuts aren’t truly nuts at all. They are the seeds of the cashew apple, a large smooth- skinned false fruit, similar in colour and texture to an apple.

Rather than developing inside the fruit, as most seeds do, the cashew nut protrudes from the base of the fleshy pod. The nut, which is a greenish colour prior to roasting, is sheathed in a tough protective double shell. This is removed during processing.
